Indonesia, which has been turned into a death valley by an earthquake and tsunami, has lost 832 people as of Sunday. The country's national disaster mitigation agency says that the death toll could be much higher than initially thought. Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that the death toll could exceed several thousand. This information was reported by the British media Reuters.
The report said that many people are still trapped under collapsed country email list buildings. A devastating tsunami hit the island of Sulawesi on Friday after an earthquake. The earthquake measured 7.5 on the Richter scale. The tsunami generated waves six to seven feet high swept away the city of Palu in Sulawesi.
Rescue workers have been carrying out rescue operations for two days after the tsunami, but they say the rescue operation is being hampered by power and communications outages in most areas.
The country's Vice President Jusuf Kalla said that about 150 aftershocks have hit the affected area since the earthquake. The extent of the damage and the suffering of the people in Dangal (a residential area in the Indonesian province of Sulawesi), which is home to about 300,000 people, is beyond words.
The earthquake struck 78 kilometers north of Palu, Sulawesi, at 5:02 p.m. local time on Friday. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).
It is worth noting that several earthquakes struck the Indonesian island of Lombok last month. Among them, the devastating earthquake on August 5 killed 460 people on the island of Lombok.
